• Moonstone is a meeting of two feldspars: submicroscopic layers of orthoclase and albite scatter light between them – the floating blue-white sheen (adularescence) that gives the stone its name.
• "Rainbow moonstone" is actually labradorite – a commercial name, not true moonstone (GIA).
• Most moonstone on the market is natural and untreated; the finest material is simply as it came from the earth.
• The famous detective novel The Moonstone (1868) by Wilkie Collins – often called the first English detective story – is named for a yellow diamond, not for our gem.
• Fine white moonstone over 15 carats is a rarity: large stones with a strong blue sheen are prized by collectors the world over.

Care

• Moonstone is soft (Mohs 6–6.5) with two perfect cleavage directions – handle it gently, and never knock it against hard objects.
• Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth; never ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and keep it away from heat.
• Remove it for sport and heavy work; on a bracelet, watch for hard knocks against tables and doorways.
• Store it separately in a soft pouch, away from harder gems and prolonged direct sunlight.
