La Tomatina

La Tomatina is the world's largest food festival, held annually on the last Wednesday of August in the town of Buñol, Spain. Born in 1945 from a spontaneous street scuffle, it has used humour as its unique weapon against dictatorship and cultural repression. Over the course of a single hour, tens of thousands hurl tomatoes in a collective catharsis, rebuilding community bonds and unleashing the joy of life through seeming chaos. Unconnected to any religion, it nonetheless tells an enduring parable of freedom, happiness, and ordinary people conquering power with laughter.
